Bible Reference - Philippians 2:13

“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

What do we do when we know the right direction but do not feel willing, confident or strong enough to follow it? Philippians 2:13 answers with encouragement: God has not left us alone in the struggle to obey. He works within His people, giving both the desire to please Him and the power to act.

The commentary carefully preserves our responsibility. God supplies the power to will and to do, but He does not make our choices or perform our obedience in our place. His influence does not cancel effort; it encourages it. We are invited to work with the grace He gives instead of receiving it without response. Purpose therefore involves dependence and participation: God works within us, and we use what He supplies.

This changes how we understand holy desire. We may assume that we must wait until motivation arrives before taking a faithful step. Yet the application notes observe that we often gain the desire to do God’s will while we are doing it. Obedience can train the heart. As we submit to the Holy Spirit, listen to God’s Word, learn from faithful believers and serve sacrificially, our desires begin to take the shape of Christ’s desires.

God’s purpose may first appear as a conviction we cannot dismiss, compassion for a need, a growing willingness to serve or a repeated invitation to act. We should test every prompting by Scripture and the character of Christ, but we should not ignore what God may be forming within us simply because we feel inadequate.

This week is for anyone who has prayed, “Lord, I know what is right, but help me want it and help me do it.” We will learn how surrender, obedience and God’s indwelling power work together to produce a changed life.

Welcome to October at LFCC Kalamunda! 🕊️

Purpose can become easier to recognise when life is settled, and the next step is obvious. But many important turns begin differently. A responsibility appears before we feel ready. An opportunity asks more of us than we expected. A familiar place becomes too small for what God is stirring within us. Sometimes the very circumstances we would not have chosen to make us stop, listen and ask what our lives are meant to serve.

Pushed into His Purpose explores how God leads people beyond comfort and passive faith. The Scriptures do not present purpose as a private search for importance or personal success. God’s purpose begins with His counsel, is centred in His saving work through Jesus Christ and draws us into loving, obeying and serving Him for the good of others.

This does not mean that every hardship is sent by God or that He forces people to obey Him. The October Scriptures hold together God’s initiative and human responsibility. God knows the end from the beginning. He works within us to awaken desire and supply strength. He places people where their courage can make a difference. Yet He also calls us to respond, use the grace we have received and take the step He has placed before us.

Across four teachings, we will move from God’s unchanging counsel to His inward work, from providential opportunity to courageous obedience, and finally to the call that leads beyond what is familiar. Between Parts 3 and 4, our Encounter Night will give us space to respond through extended praise and worship. There will be no sermon or teaching that evening; we will simply gather to honour God and surrender ourselves afresh to His purpose.

Whether you feel certain about your direction, unsure of what comes next, hesitant because you feel inadequate, or curious about Christian faith, you are welcome. October is an invitation to discover that purpose is not manufactured by striving. It is received from God, formed within us and lived through faithful obedience.

Bible Reference - Isaiah 46:10

“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure."

Life often gives us only the next piece of the story. We can see what has changed, what has closed or what now requires a decision, but we cannot see where everything will lead. Isaiah 46:10 directs our attention to the One who sees the whole course from the beginning. God does not discover His purpose as events unfold. His counsel already stands.

In its original setting, this declaration distinguishes the living God from powerless idols. He can announce what is still to come because history is not beyond His authority. The commentary describes a plan that reaches from eternity past to eternity future and finds its centre in God’s kingdom and His saving work through Jesus Christ. His promises do not depend on favourable conditions, and His spoken word will be fulfilled in its appointed time.

This truth does not make believers passive. Confidence in God’s counsel gives us a firm place from which to obey. When plans change, progress feels slow or the next stage remains hidden, we do not have to invent a purpose in panic. We can return to what God has revealed in Scripture, remember His character and ask what faithfulness requires now.

Part 1 will also challenge the popular idea that purpose is mainly about finding a perfect career, gaining recognition or building a life around personal ambition. God’s purpose is larger. He calls people into salvation, forms them to reflect Christ and involves them in work that serves His kingdom and their generation.

You may not know the whole route, but you can know the God whose counsel will stand. Join us as we begin October by placing our uncertainty inside the larger certainty of His faithfulness.

Bible Reference - Esther 4:14

“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Esther did not choose the crisis that confronted her. A decree threatened her people, speaking could cost her life, and remaining silent appeared safer. Mordecai helped her see that her position carried more than privilege. It carried an opportunity to serve at a moment when her courage could protect others.

The commentary points to several responses Esther could have chosen. She could have surrendered to despair, protected only herself or waited for God to solve the problem without her involvement. Instead, she recognized that providence had placed her within reach of meaningful action. She sought direction, accepted the risk and used the influence available to her.

Mordecai’s confidence that deliverance would arise also keeps the story centered on God. Esther was responsible for her response, but God’s purpose did not depend on human greatness. She was invited to participate in what He was doing. Her position became purposeful when she placed it at His service.

Our moments may be less dramatic, but the question still reaches us. Why has God placed us in this family, workplace, neighborhood, church or relationship? Who can be helped by the access, experience, compassion or influence already within our hands? Purpose is often discovered by noticing the good we can do where we are.

Part 3 will help us move beyond self-protection and passive waiting. When an opportunity to serve God and our generation appears, faith asks for direction and then acts. We may not know beforehand how God will work, but we can trust Him enough to use the moment faithfully.

Jeremiah 1:5

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations”

Genesis 12:1

"Now the LORD had said to Abram: ‘Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.”

The final teaching brings together two different calls. Jeremiah learned that God had known him, set him apart and appointed him before his public ministry began. Abram heard God tell him to leave his country, family setting and father’s house for a land that had not yet been identified. One call reached back before birth; the other required a step into an unknown future. Both show that God’s purpose comes before the person fully understands what obedience will involve.

Jeremiah 1:5 records a particular appointment to prophetic ministry. It does not mean that every believer has Jeremiah’s exact calling. It does reveal that God’s knowledge is personal and His assignments are intentional. The commentary notes that all Christians share the calling to love, obey and serve God, while some receive a specific task. When guidance is still developing, we can faithfully live the mission already made clear.

Abram’s call shows what happens when purpose leads beyond familiarity. God did not give him the complete map. Abram had to trust God farther than he could see, leave influences that threatened his faith and follow the One who had spoken. The journey would train him for a special end, and its effect would extend far beyond his own life to future generations.

The commentary gives us a memorable image: Abram built altars along the line of his march. Worship travelled with him. He was not sustained by one emotional beginning but by a continuing relationship with God through each stage of the road.

Part 4 will help us consider what obedience may require us to leave, what promise is calling us forward and what next step is already clear. God may not show us every detail before we move, but His presence is enough for the step He asks us to take.

The October journey ends with a call to live purpose, not merely admire it. God’s counsel stands, His Spirit works within us, our present position can serve others, and faith follows when He calls us beyond the familiar.

Week 4: Encounter Night – A Night of Surrender

Bible Reference - Philippians 2:13

"For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

After three weeks of considering God’s counsel, His work within us and the moments in which He calls us to act, we will pause for an evening devoted entirely to praise and worship.

There will be no teaching or preaching on Encounter Night. Through songs of adoration, trust and surrender, we will turn our attention towards God and offer Him our plans, abilities, questions and future. This is not a night for forcing an answer about what comes next. It is a night to honour the One whose purpose is good and to make room for our hearts to become willing before Him.

Some may come with a clear sense of calling. Others may feel uncertain, tired or hesitant. All are welcome to worship. We will celebrate who God is, remember His faithfulness and respond with a simple prayer of the heart: “Lord, let Your will be done in me.”

Join us for an unhurried evening in God’s presence as we surrender our own plans and renew our willingness to follow where He leads.
