How to Discern the Holy Spirit in Our Lives

🎧 Listen on the go: Audio Narrative
This message explores how believers can recognise and discern the voice of the Holy Spirit by understanding who He is, how He dwells within us, and how He faithfully guides us into truth.
Introduction: Why Discernment Matters
To discern the voice and guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we must first understand a foundational truth: the Holy Spirit truly dwells within us.
The Holy Spirit is not an influence, a feeling, or a force. He is a Person, fully God, and fully united with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit has never acted independently from the Father or the Son, because God is one — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — working together in perfect unity from all eternity.
If we want to learn how to discern His voice, we must first understand who He is, why He dwells in us, and how He speaks.
The Holy Spirit Dwells in Us by Grace
There is nothing we can do to earn the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. His presence within us is entirely the grace of God.
📖 Ephesians 1:13–14 (NKJV)
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”
The Holy Spirit is given to us when we believe the gospel. Just as forgiveness is received through faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit is received through faith in Jesus’ exaltation.
• Jesus was crucified — therefore, we receive forgiveness.
• Jesus was glorified — therefore, we receive the indwelling Holy Spirit.
It is just as certain that we receive the Holy Spirit as it is that we receive forgiveness. This is not based on emotion or experience, but on biblical truth.
The Fullness of God Lives Within Us
From this truth, we must come to an astonishing realisation: God’s fullness now dwells within us.
The same divine power that lived in Jesus — the power to heal, restore, speak life, perform miracles, and reveal truth — now lives in us through the Holy Spirit. This must be true, because Jesus has been glorified.
📖 John 16:14 (NKJV)
“He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”
Jesus is explaining that the Holy Spirit’s role is always to glorify Christ, not Himself. The Spirit reveals the truth of who Jesus is and makes Christ’s life, words, and authority real to us. When we discern the Holy Spirit correctly, His guidance will always lead us closer to Jesus and reflect His character.
📖 Ephesians 1:3 (NKJV)
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”
Paul reminds believers that everything we need spiritually has already been given to us in Christ. These blessings are not earned or gradually achieved—they are ours because we are united with Jesus. The Holy Spirit helps us recognise, access, and live out these spiritual blessings in our daily lives.
📖 Ephesians 3:19 (NKJV)
“To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
This verse reveals that knowing Christ’s love is not merely intellectual but experiential. As we grow in relationship with Jesus, His love fills us more deeply, shaping our hearts and lives. Being “filled with all the fullness of God” points to the Holy Spirit working within us so that God’s nature and character are expressed through us.
These verses reveal that God has not held anything back. Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have received the fullness of God.
When we truly believe this, it changes how we live. Just as Jesus listened to the Father and followed His will, we too can listen to the Spirit and walk in obedience.
Being Led by the Spirit
📖 Romans 8:14 (NKJV)
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
As children of God, we are invited to live led by the Holy Spirit. God desires to communicate His will to us — but we must learn how He speaks and how He leads.
The Holy Spirit will always direct us toward the will of the Father. And what is the Father’s will?
That humanity would know His love.
We grow in sensitivity to the Spirit as we spend time with God:
• in Scripture
• in prayer
• in worship
• in fellowship with other believers
Discernment grows through relationship.
Learning the Voice of the Spirit: A Personal Testimony
When I was a young Christian, I attended an Easter youth camp. It was a powerful weekend filled with worship and reflection, including time spent at crosses on a hill early one morning.
On the final night, as the youth were praying for their leaders, I sensed the Holy Spirit prompting me to anoint my youth pastor with oil. I walked to the kitchen, returned with oil, and prayed for him.
Later, I questioned myself. Was I being dramatic? Maybe. But what mattered most was not whether I understood everything perfectly — it was that I was obedient.
That experience taught me something important: learning the voice of the Holy Spirit often begins with simple obedience, even when we are unsure. Over time, discernment becomes clearer as we listen and obey.

Discernment Requires Testing and Confirmation
Not every thought or impression comes from the Holy Spirit. Discernment means recognising where a leading is coming from.
The Holy Spirit will never:
• lead us away from God
• lead us away from the church
• contradict Scripture
• stop spiritual growth
• produce confusion without peace
If a direction brings confusion, anxiety, or loss of peace, it is wise to pause and return to God in prayer.
True discernment must always be:
• confirmed by the Word of God
• aligned with the character of Christ
• leading toward spiritual maturity
Learning from Scripture: Peter and Paul
Peter once struggled with discernment when fear influenced his actions.
📖 Galatians 2:11–13 (NKJV)
“Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face… fearing those who were of the circumcision.”
Peter allowed people’s opinions to influence his behaviour, and it led others astray. Paul corrected him, and Peter learned to listen more faithfully to the Spirit.
Paul, on the other hand, learned discernment through obedience.
📖 Acts 16:9–10 (NKJV)
“And a vision appeared to Paul in the night… immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us.”
Paul listened and acted immediately. His life shows the transformation that comes from learning to discern and obey the Spirit’s voice.
Practical Help for Everyday Life
Learning the Spirit’s voice often begins in simple ways. I often find myself thanking the Holy Spirit throughout the day as He reminds me of things, cautions me, or redirects my choices.
As we listen and obey in small things, we become more sensitive to His voice in deeper matters.
📖 John 16:13 (NKJV)
“When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth.”
The Holy Spirit guides us in every area of life:
• walking with God
• marriage and family
• relationships
• work and finances
• service and ministry
• helping others
📖 Romans 8:11 (NKJV)
“If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you… He will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
A Call to Practice Discernment
Discernment grows through practice. We must not become complacent or passive. Instead, we are called to listen carefully, test what we hear, and obey faithfully.
Our God is a living God who speaks.
📖 John 15:26 (NKJV)
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”
Jesus is saying that after He returns to the Father, the Holy Spirit will come to help believers. The Spirit’s main role is to point people to Jesus—reminding us who He is, what He taught, and why He matters. The Spirit doesn’t draw attention to Himself; He shines the spotlight on Jesus so we can know Him clearly.
📖 John 16:13–14 (NKJV)
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth… He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”
Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit will lead believers into truth—not by giving new ideas, but by helping us understand Jesus’ words and God’s will. The Spirit’s work is to lift up Jesus, helping us see His greatness, understand His teaching, and grow in faith. Everything the Spirit shows us will always point back to Jesus.
The Holy Spirit’s job is to help us understand Jesus, remind us of His truth, and make Him known. He doesn’t promote Himself—He glorifies Christ. The Holy Spirit always points us to Jesus and confirms truth through God’s Word.
Gentle Reflection
Thank you for taking the time to read and reflect on this message. It is our prayer that this teaching has helped bring clarity, confidence, and encouragement as you learn to discern the voice and guidance of the Holy Spirit in your life.
Throughout this message, we have been reminded that the Holy Spirit truly dwells within us by the grace of God. He is not distant or silent, but present, active, and faithful to guide us into truth. As we grow in our understanding of who He is, spend time in God’s Word, and walk in simple obedience, we become more sensitive to His voice and leading.
The key lesson we take with us is this: discernment flows from relationship. As we listen, test what we hear against Scripture, and obey with humility, the Holy Spirit shapes our lives to reflect the will of the Father and the character of Christ.
May we continue to walk with open hearts, attentive ears, and a willingness to follow where the Spirit leads — trusting that God, who has given us His Spirit, will faithfully guide us each step of the way.
A note from the speaker: "It is my prayer that as you engage with this message, you gain a deeper understanding of how precious you are to our heavenly Father. Remember, hope is not optional—it is essential for the journey ahead."
