Energised by His Presence – Part 2

Awareness and Encounter with God’s Presence

Grow in awareness of God’s presence as prayer, Scripture and obedience strengthen you to fulfil His purposes in everyday life and through life’s battles.

Introduction

God has always invited His people into a close relationship with Him. We have heard different messages about His presence and considered different experiences of knowing Him. These messages draw our attention to the One who empowers, energises and guides us.

In Part 1, we considered how dwelling in God’s presence strengthens our daily walk and enables us to serve others with His love. Now we will consider our awareness of His presence and how prayer helps us respond to Him, both in everyday responsibilities and in the battles we face.

Have we positioned our hearts to encounter Him? Are we attentive to the truth that Almighty God is with us? He invites us to live in that relationship, listening to His Word and receiving the help of His Spirit.

God Is Present Beyond Our Awareness

Jeremiah 23:23–24 (NKJV)

“Am I a God near at hand,” says the LORD, “And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?” says the LORD; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the LORD.

In this passage, God challenges the idea that anyone could hide from Him or live beyond His knowledge. His presence fills heaven and earth. This truth calls us to honesty before Him and assures us that no place lies outside His reach.

We may become particularly aware of His presence during prayer, worship or a church gathering. Yet He is also present while we clean the car, work, prepare dinner or attend to ordinary responsibilities. Our awareness does not determine whether He is there.

That distinction matters. We can be distracted while God remains faithful. We can learn to turn our attention towards Him, acknowledge His presence and depend upon His wisdom throughout the day. The One we worship at church is the same God we can trust in our daily lives.

God Has Promised to Be with His People

The Bible repeatedly shows God calling people to trust Him as He leads them. Abraham responded to His call before knowing where the journey would take him. He went in faith, trusting God’s promise of blessing (Genesis 12:1–3; Hebrews 11:8).

When God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, He assured him of His help. Later, as Moses sought direction for the journey, God promised that His presence would go with him and give him rest (Exodus 3:12; 33:14).

Joshua 1:5 (NKJV)

“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua was taking up a demanding responsibility. God’s promise gave him a foundation for courage. He could follow the Lord’s direction knowing that the One who had been with Moses would also be with him.

Psalm 23:4 (NKJV excerpt)

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me…”

David’s assurance includes the valley. He trusted the Shepherd’s presence even when the path was dark and threatening. We can also turn to the Lord within difficulty and receive strength to keep walking with Him.

God continued to assure His prophets of His presence as they carried out their calling. This promise is also echoed in the letter to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV excerpt)

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Jesus connected His presence with the commission He gave His disciples to make disciples of all nations.

Matthew 28:20 (NKJV excerpt)

“and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

The commission was demanding, but His followers would receive His help. Through the Holy Spirit, believers continue to know His presence and empowering as they carry out the work He gives.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Know God’s Presence

God’s presence throughout creation and the Holy Spirit’s indwelling of believers are related truths with different meanings. God is everywhere present, and He also gives His Spirit to those who believe the gospel. Ephesians 1:13 connects this gift with faith in Christ.

Romans 8:16 (NKJV)

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

The Holy Spirit helps us know that we belong to God. He works within us as we receive His truth, pray and respond to His leading. Our relationship with the Father is grounded in what He has done through Jesus.

Peter, the other disciples and Paul lived with an awareness of God’s presence and power. Consider Peter’s response to the man who could not walk at the temple gate.

Acts 3:6 (NKJV)

Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”

Peter later explained that the man’s healing had not come through the apostles’ own power or godliness. He directed the people to Jesus and faith in His name (Acts 3:12–16). This example reminds us where our confidence belongs: in the Lord whose power enables His people to serve.

Prayer Deepens Our Awareness and Dependence

Prayer is a primary way we become attentive to God’s presence. We acknowledge Him as God, bring our needs before Him and surrender to His authority. We make room to listen and receive direction.

Philippians 4:6–7 (NKJV)

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Supplication means bringing our requests to God earnestly. Paul invites us to pray about everything with thanksgiving, trusting the Father who hears us. The peace He gives guards our hearts and minds through Christ, even when we cannot yet understand how a situation will unfold.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV)

“pray without ceasing”

This instruction encourages a continuing life of prayer. We can set aside focused time with God and also turn to Him during the day. We can seek wisdom before a conversation, thank Him as we work and ask for help when a challenge arises.

Prayer is a means of communion with God. It helps us recognise His guidance and receive His strengthening. As we listen, we also need to obey what He has shown us. A prayerful heart becomes a responsive heart, willing to act upon His Word.

Why does God empower and energise us? He gives us help so that we can fulfil His purposes. Moses, Joseph, Joshua, David, Gideon and Samuel had different responsibilities, but their stories direct us to God’s work in the lives of those He calls. Our dependence upon Him also has a purpose: to do what He entrusts to us.

Jesus Shows Us Surrender in Prayer

Jesus lived in close fellowship with the Father and prayed as He approached the cross. In Gethsemane, He brought the suffering before Him to the Father and surrendered to His will. Mark 14:32–36 describes His deep distress, while Luke 22:44 records His earnest prayer in agony.

His surrender did not make the suffering unreal. He remained faithful to the Father through it. The writer of Hebrews points us towards the purpose beyond that suffering.

Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV excerpt)

“who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…”

Jesus endured with the joy of the Father’s purpose before Him. His example teaches us to bring our difficulties to God, surrender our will and trust Him for strength to remain faithful. Peace and confidence in God can sustain us within a battle.

The reason we can know this relationship with God is the saving work Jesus accomplished. Through His death and resurrection, we are brought to the Father. The presence and help of the Holy Spirit are gifts of His grace, and we can receive them with gratitude.

God’s Guidance in Everyday Life

We need the Holy Spirit’s wisdom while going about normal daily life. His leading matters at work, in our homes, in our decisions and in the way we treat people. Awareness of His presence helps us remain ready to respond.

He can remind us of a truth we have learnt, bring a person to mind for prayer or prompt us towards a faithful response. Scripture gives us a foundation for recognising His guidance. As we dwell with Him, we can listen with humility and allow His Word to shape our actions.

At work, this may mean asking for wisdom before responding to pressure, choosing integrity when compromise seems easier or approaching a difficult conversation with patience. These ordinary responses matter. God’s presence energises us to live as His children where He has placed us.

When a challenge arises, we can bring it into prayer instead of carrying it alone. God can give peace, clarity and strength for the next step. We can trust Him for breakthrough in His way and time, while continuing to follow the direction He has made clear.

God’s Presence in the Battle

We all face battles. Some concern difficult circumstances; others involve temptation, discouragement or opposition to God’s truth. Awareness of His presence helps us look beyond what immediately confronts us and seek His perspective.

We have already seen this pattern in Jesus. He understood the Father’s purpose beyond the suffering of the cross. As we turn to God, we can also ask what faithfulness looks like in the situation before us and what He wants us to do.

2 Corinthians 10:4–5 (NKJV)

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”

Paul describes God’s power overcoming arguments and thoughts that oppose the knowledge of Him. In this context, strongholds picture entrenched resistance to His truth. We depend on God’s Word and power to expose falsehood and bring our thinking into obedience to Christ.

Prayer belongs within this dependence. In Ephesians 6:18, Paul calls believers to pray in the Spirit with perseverance and to pray for other believers. We can stand in God’s truth and intercede for people who need His help, trusting Him to work.

His presence gives us courage to continue. We can seek peace and joy in Him as we face the battle, remembering that our strength comes from the Lord and that His purposes extend beyond what we can presently see.

Nothing Can Separate Us from His Love

Romans 8:38–39 (NKJV)

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Paul speaks specifically about God’s love in Christ. The circumstances and powers he names cannot separate believers from that love. This gives us assurance within struggle and supports our confidence in the God who has promised to remain with His people.

Matthew 1:23 explains the name Immanuel as “God with us”. Through Jesus, we see God’s saving love brought near. He is with us in the midst of life and its battles. Let us be grateful for this relationship and remember how deeply we are blessed by His grace.

Living to Fulfil the Father’s Purposes

Jesus’ prayer in John 17 brings together knowing God, glorifying Him and fulfilling the work entrusted to Him.

John 17:3–4 (NKJV)

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.”

Jesus prayed these words before His arrest and crucifixion. He spoke of the work He had faithfully carried out and of the completion of His mission, with the cross still before Him. Later, John records His declaration from the cross that His saving work was finished (John 19:30).

Eternal life involves knowing the Father and Jesus Christ whom He sent. This relationship should shape the way we live. We glorify the Father as we receive His truth, follow His Spirit and obey His direction.

God has created us for purpose. We want to live so that, at the end of our journey, we can look back upon a life given to what He entrusted to us. Our calling is to honour Him through faithful obedience in the opportunities He provides.

We need His presence to energise us, His Spirit to direct us and willing hearts to surrender to the Father’s will. We do not know the best way through every situation. We can seek His guidance and trust Him as He leads.

Keeping His Presence at the Forefront

How do we keep this truth before us? We read God’s Word and communicate with Him through prayer. Scripture teaches us who He is, what He has promised and how He calls us to live. Prayer brings those truths into the situations we face.

The close relationship Jesus expresses in John 17 invites us to consider our own fellowship with the Father. God wants us to dwell with Him daily, remaining attentive to His presence and His desire to guide, provide for and empower us.

We can consult Him throughout the day. Before a decision, ask for wisdom. When He brings a truth to mind, respond to it. When a need appears, pray. When He gives help, thank Him. In this way, awareness of His presence becomes part of the life we live.

A Gentle Moment of Reflection

As we conclude this two-part series, let us bring its lessons together. In Part 1, we considered God as the source of our strength and saw how dwelling in His presence enables humble service. In Part 2, we have considered awareness of His presence, prayerful dependence and obedience through daily life and its battles.

God is present whether or not we are paying attention. He has promised to be with His people, and His Spirit helps us know that we belong to Him. Through prayer and Scripture, we learn to respond to His guidance. The strength He gives enables us to fulfil His purposes and bring His love to others.

· Where do I need to remember that God is with me during ordinary daily life?

· What concern or battle do I need to bring before Him in prayer?

· What has He already shown me through His Word that calls for an obedient response?

Take a moment to speak with the Father about these questions. Thank Him for His presence, ask for the Holy Spirit’s help and place the next faithful step before Him. Pray also for your family, church and community, that together we may know His love and follow His direction.

Let us continue to read His Word, communicate with Him in prayer and remain willing to obey. As we dwell in His presence, may His strength energise our lives, His wisdom guide our decisions and His love become visible through our service. We belong to a faithful God who is with us throughout the journey.
